newcomer ABB aims to take 10% of the market

ABB has made
a belated entry to the servo drives sector with the ambitious aim
of capturing 10% of the $1.78bn global market by 2010. The company
has invested around $15m and devoted more than 150 man-years of
engineering effort to develop its new Machinery Drive.

companies are touting rival integrated servo motor drives that,
they claim, will deliver substantial savings in cabling and other
costs, especially in applications such as packaging machines

| Baldor
completes Rockwell deal to take 25% of N American market |

Baldor has
completed its acquisition of Rockwell Automation's Power Systems
division consisting of the Dodge mechanical, and Reliance
motors and repairs, businesses. The $1.8bn deal more than doubles
Baldor's size and makes it the largest supplier of electric motors
in North America, holding around a quarter of the market.

rotors boost hybrid truck efficiency by 40% |

The US Army
has begun testing tough 15.9-tonne trucks powered by a hybrid diesel-electric
system which uses 105kW copper-rotor motors to drive each of four
axles. The drive system is said to decrease emissions and increase
fuel efficiency by up to 40%, as well as reducing noise levels and
reducing lifecycle costs.
